Default Welcome to Wauseon.com (The About Page)

This site serves as a location for all citizens of Wauseon to download information, local news, and freely discuss that info in a forum open to all, including those that have no other free means of getting the information or offering opinion & information. It is basicly a site run by its visitors, with publicly released information regularly posted to it. The website is also a permanent archive of information, moderated by its own visitors. So far we have one moderator, one of the first visitors to the site has volunteered for that job, but we need a few more to be sure that abusive posts, spam, or vandalism are promptly removed. If you are a reasonable and fair person and would like one of those positions, contact us.

The website designed to be easily readable with text to voice software, and any page can be translated into any of 13 different languages with a single mouse click. An RSS Feed is also available for any forum section including Meeting Minutes RSS to integrate into your own browser or mail reader so that you are automatically receiving new posts to any area of the site that you wish. Oh, and the site is formatted for PDA devices here.

We have also implemented a keyword notification system which allows you to set keywords in your member control panel and you will be notified via email, or PM or both, if any of those keywords are ever posted in a new thread. As well as many other features, with more available in the future.

Member Posting
Any registered member may freely post messages or information by clicking the "New Thread" or "Post Reply" link anywhere in the forum.

Why Do I Have To Register To Post?
The main reason we require registration to post messages is to weed out spammers and abusers. Allowing any visitor to post messages would quickly turn the entire website into ads for Viagra, Low Mortgages, and any other trash that spammers are hawking. Spammers to message boards are lazy, and will not go through the registration process to post their links. Sometimes they will register though, and we can spot it almost immediately, and ban them accordingly.

If you have suggestions for forum topics or are a local group or organization wishing to have your own forum section set up and/or moderator privileges contact us at the link at the bottom of this page.

Posting is pretty simple and straight forward, and there is a FAQ section which elaborates on the full capabilities of the website.

Titles
User titles (the title which shows up under your username) follow this naming scheme:
0 Posts - Reader
1 Post - Member
10 Posts - Regular Poster
20 Posts - Esteemed Member

That will probably change so that more are added as the forum grows.

Calendar

The calendar lists local community events, and features the ability for any website visitor to choose to be reminded of the event by email before the day of the event.

If you have an event to post or want to be reminded of an event via email visit the calendar page.

Contact us with questions or suggestions. To report a bad post use the controls at the top of the post (exclamation triangle icon).

Shop Local

There is a section for free rotating ads in the main forum page - with a header called "Shop Local". They will in and out rotate randomly with each page load. It is uncompleted, because we have only two merchants in it. If you are a merchant and would like space in that location contact us. We will need to get a professional looking logo no larger than 180 wide and 72 pixels high from you.

Thank You,
Jim Snape (webmaster)

Default Updates

Update History:
  • 03/15/2008 - Old website taken offline, all files archived.
  • 03/22/2008 - Newley designed website brought online.
  • 04/01/2008 - Added comprehensive visitor statistics. Logs actual visitors, and excludes search engines, and page-zone office IP's (67.76.156.0/24) to prevent dilution of website administration and search engine indexing into the statistics.
  • 04/01/2008 - Removed registered user listing to prevent spammers from joining, and sending private message (PM) spam to everyone on the list. It didn't happen, just taking precautions from it ever happening.
  • 04/04/2008 - Added Obituary section which pulls RSS feeds from the State Line Observer website.
  • 04/05/2008 - Added automatic thread/post translation into 13 major languages click on 'Traduzca esta página' link at the top of any thread to bring up a choice of languages.
  • 04/05/2008 - Added Search Local Websites page to allow searching of many websites in the area at the same time. Many local sites are built using frames, and not able to be indexed by most major search engines. Others are designed poorly for search engine optimization, so the effectiveness of this tool is very limited, but better than sifting through non local websites for local information.
  • 04/10/2008 - Added thumbnails of all links in our Local Website Directory. Any new links added will automatically have a thumbnail attached using the Thumbshots.org & websnapr services.
  • 04/11/2008 - Nice enhancement! Added the ability to set keywords and be notified via email or PM, or both, if the words on your list are posted to a new thread (in subject or body) on the forum. To use the feature log into your user preferences and check the boxes in the Messaging and Notification section. That will enable it, then you need to set keywords on this page. This only notifies a hit on your keywords in new threads, and not replies to threads.
  • 04/27/2008 - Added condensed police scanner feed. The feed takes a day's scanner broadcast and removes dead air time, leaving only active broadcast.
